CHARACTER

The SOILS: rich in iron, barren and yet diverse. The WINEMAKERS. Real characters full of boundless passion. Their aim: to perfectly express the character of their home in their wines – independent and genuine.

SOIL

Iron-rich loam over sparse green slate

The vines in all the sub-regions of Eisenberg map are rooted in particularly iron-rich soils – the origin of the goût du terroir of EisenbergDAC. In addition, diverse rock formations and soil composition offer varied conditions across a very small area, which can be tasted in the subtle differences in the wines. However, the majority of the vines grow on different types of solid rock from the Mesozoic and Palaeozoic eras: oxidised green slate, quartz phyllite, calcareous slate or serpentinite. These rocks are also found on Austria’s highest mountain, the Grossglockner. Above the solid rock is a layer of clay of varying degrees of thickness but with an iron content that is significantly higher than in the rest of Burgenland. And that is what gives the EisenbergDAC its unmistakable character.

WINEMAKERS

Real characters: the winemakers of Eisenberg

The winegrowers who produce wines with the EisenbergDAC designation of origin came together in 2010 to form an association that currently has 46 members. A distinguishing feature is the very small number of large wineries – the biggest of which have 15-18 hectares of vineyards. More than half of the appellation’s winemakers are part-time vintners who have traditionally sold their wines in local wine taverns. These Buschenschank, as they are known in Austria, offer homemade wines and regional specialities – and perfectly express the openness and joie de vivre of the people of southern Burgenland. They are also a cultural heritage that preseves the individuality and the idyllic landscape of the region. Thanks to the limitless passion of Eisenberg’s winegrowers for their craft, region and their history, the wines produced here today are among the most prolific red and white wines produced in Austria.
