Weingut Batthyány

Nobility bound. Count Ivan Batthyány has been revitalising the 400-year-old family tradition in Rechnitz since 2015 and has cultivating a selection of grape varieties with a clear focus on Blaufränkisch on the primary rock soils at the foot of the Geschriebenstein using biodynamic principles since 2017. Incidentally, the ‘Rindler’ site was already the favourite terroir of Count Ádám II Batthyány 300 years ago, who had the vineyard chapel built as protection against the constant storms and which can still be visited today.

The vineyards here are often only one, two or three rows wide, interspersed with numerous old fruit and chestnut trees of nearly forgotten varieties. This very old cultivation structure provides the perfect habitat for endangered insects, such as the carpenter bee, the largest native bee species. Wines of the highest quality are vinified here in harmony with nature and its inhabitants.
