Hocus-pocus! Or is it? Markus Faulhammer from Schützenhof winery is known as the “enfant terrible of Eisenberg”. But what seems a little crazy at first glance is actually a well-considered, uncompromising winemaking philosophy, paired with a great deal of humour and joy in being a winemaker. “There’s no hocus-pocus here,” declares the winemaker, pointing to the fact they are building on the sound knowledge of seven generations at the winery. “Hands-off” is their method in the cellar, because wine needs peace and time to mature. At Schützenhof, they prefer to invest their working time in the vineyards, which are cultivated organically. The old vines are also lovingly cared for and it shows…some vines have already reached the venerable age of 90 years! Plus, in order to bolster biodiversity, 60 apple trees are planted in and around the vineyards, creating a habitat for many localwildlife.
